Observations

So, I've been doing a few walkthrough observations and trying to provide timely feedback. Last Monday, I attended a workshop put on by DESE with Mike Rutherford. Mike Rutherford is a speaker who primarily presents on feedback. How can we provide feedback to teachers that is meaningful and helps teachers to get better at their craft. So far, we have discussed 30 second feedback and 5 minute feedback.

30 second feedback is a quick pat on the back for the good things you are doing in your classroom. It doesn't take long to give and is pretty much one sided. You may have noticed this type of feedback when I do walkthrough observations. I like to send an email (now I can actually attach it to the TalentEd form) that is quick and gives some positives.

5 minute feedback is more of a conversation. It starts out the same way as 30 second feedback, but I will try to tie what I saw in your classroom to one of the "23 Artisan Themes" which research has shown to be used by skilled and talented teachers. The 23 themes can be found here. (I certainly don't have all of these memorized, but I have the book in my office for anyone interested.) We then have a discussion about the lesson and the themes.

The whole point of both versions is to help teachers get better.

A few things that I will be looking for:

1.) I am not a big "Show me your lesson plans" kind of person, however a good lesson starts with a solid plan. Be sure you have good detailed lesson plans.

2.) "I can..." statements. Do you have them and are you using them with your students.

3.) Are you utilizing instructional time. I am not a fan of time wasters like worksheets. (Disclaimer: Not all worksheets are bad, but word searches, crossword puzzles, and coloring sheets are not high on my list)

4.) The items we are working on with the CW project: Assessment Capable Learners, Feedback, Classroom Discussions, and Student Teacher Relationships. (Honestly, this may be too much to work on all at once. I think we should really get good at the two from last year before we add others, but all are important.)

Success is a never ending struggle. Keep working and reflecting to make yourself the best teacher you can be.
