There is a saying that feedback is the breakfast of champions. Please take a quick survey to give me some feedback. Name One Thing...

I have been out of the office more than I would like the last couple of weeks, but I have learned a little about the SLO process which is a part of the evaluation system.

SLO stands for Student Learner Objectives (or Outcomes, I've had conflicting reports). It is a way to tie student achievement to teacher evaluation. For years we have fought the idea of attaching our evaluation to student achievement, but the Feds finally made it mandatory in order to receive funding (which is a big deal). Our state was also struggling with the requirements of No Child Left Behind, so Missouri requested a waiver. We were granted a waiver, with stipulations. Those stipulations were addressed through MSIP 5 (in case you didn't know, MSIP stands for Missouri School Improvement Plan and this is the 5th version).

MSIP 5 addressed the issue of using student achievement on teacher evaluations by introducing the SLO process. Otherwise, we would be looking at MAP data to determine your worth as a teacher and we all know that is a bad idea on many levels. SLO's measure the impact you have on a student's learning through a process that we already have in place called data teams (or PLC, or the CW). We are just taking it a step further.

So, when we start talking about SLO's, it's nothing to get too freaked out about. It all ties together with our collaborative work and unless the state changes something (which happens), we are on the right track and you are doing exactly what you need to do.

I feel blessed to work with such a wonderful team and I appreciate the way we pull together to help each other. I want to give a shout out to Cody Young for the way he and Melanie Schalk partner in science. On occasions when there is a sub, Cody has taken both groups of students to the cafeteria and led the lesson so that no instruction gets lost for those students. They have also done some team teaching which has been awesome to watch.

FYI - All growth plans need to be submitted by next Friday, September 25. If you are still having problems, let me know.
