Last year, I had the pleasure of listening to Michael Fullan put on a workshop on educational leadership. Fullan has written many books on the subject of Educational leadership and is considered to be an expert in the field. It was a great lecture on the philosophical side of leadership that really made me stop and think about what I do. However, being a practitioner, I have to look for the practical. Fullan referenced another author named Daniel Pink who writes about motivation and what makes people do what they do. Here is a quick video clip from Pink's book Drive that is very interesting.

People are motivated by three things: Challenge, everyone loves a challenge. We are motivated by success and meeting the challenge whether that be figuring out a complex problem or learning a new concept. Mastery, people who are truly expert in their craft are motivated by mastery. We want to constantly improve our abilities. Finally, people are motivated to make a contribution. We all want to make a difference.

As a teacher (practitioner), what can you gain from this video that you can put into practice? Do you have students who are unmotivated and won't work? Pink suggests that external motivators (behavior plans) don't work, and that we have to get that motivation to be intrinsic. But, how in the world do we do that?

I think the one thing that Daniel Pink neglects in his study on motivation is the power that relationships have on what we do. Teamwork and the expectations of others can be a powerful motivator. Students will work hard to meet their teacher's expectations. We all work harder when we know that other team members are depending on us to pull our weight. I believe relationships are the key to motivating students. Sometimes building that relationship is hard, but the end result is worth it. Thank you for being there for your students.

Here is little video about math instruction.
