Principal PLC
Have you ever thought, "Owings is always making me do this PLC stuff, but does he have to do a PLC?" Well, the answer is yes. All building principals meet once a month for our very own PLC. In the past, we have studied the evaluation process, done book studies, and participated in a variety of other fun and exciting things. Currently, we are spending a lot of time on MMD and the goals we have chosen to focus on (Assessment Capable Learners, Data Based Decision Making, etc.) We have coupled these with building walk throughs where we get to see the great things going on in other buildings. Our most recent meeting was held at the Kindergarten Center. Here are some things I saw that I think could be useful for us.
This is a writing progression. Students are taught to compare their writing to see where they fall on the continuum and then they talk about what they need to do to move to the next level.
This is the building rubric. All teachers teach the same rubric for all writing.
These are a great tool to initiate conversations with students and they promote a growth mindset. Students can see where they are and where they want to be with concrete examples on how to get there.
In case you are wondering, the Middle School will be hosting the Principal PLC meeting in January. Expect groups of administrators to randomly pop in your rooms and observe your teaching. Of course we will be specifically looking for data based decision making and assessment capable learners, but feedback and metacognition would be great to see as well.
Just a few more days until Christmas Break!
I found this satisfying.
