Last week, I went to hear Dave Burgess speak in Columbia. In case you didn't know, Dave Burgess is the author of the book "Teach Like a Pirate". Yes, he does dress like a pirate for his presentation. No, he is not suggesting you make your students walk the plank. Pirate is an acronym for Passion, Immersion, Rapport, Ask and analyze, Transformation, Enthusiasm. Dave suggests that these are the qualities of a passionate, on-fire, and engaging teacher. Dave also suggests that teachers use hooks to get students to engage in their lessons. Not the kind of hooks that pirates sometimes wear, but activities to garner interest. The analogy he made that struck home with me is that teaching is like having a barbecue. Everybody loves a barbecue with all of the extras that goes along with it, but what if you sit down and bite into your steak and it isn't cooked. That's how our lessons are sometimes. We have all of the supplies we need - technology, books, pictures, etc, but if we don't bring the propane, our lesson winds up a little cold and flavorless. So, bring the heat to your lessons. My favorite quote from the workshop - "Don't just teach a lesson, create an experience for your kids".
If you are interested, I have the book for you to read. Some schools have even tried a 30 day challenge where teachers try to do a different hook every day for 30 days.
