One thing I am trying to learn to do is to spend my time on what is important. I frequently get caught up doing email or approving leave requests, etc. Those things have to be done, but it's important to spend our time on the things that are going to have the biggest impact. In fact, when we met with Herman back during the summer, we came up with learning objectives that were more important than the others and we decided we were going to spend our academic lab time focused on those things. After all, they are essential.

So, the last two days I have made it an effort to be in classrooms during academic lab. That is important to me. What I learned is that every group has a little different spin on how academic lab should be handled and that none of you are doing it like we talked about last summer. Now, to be fair, Herman and I both said that we were good with you putting your own spin on things, but there are a few things that need to take place.

1.) Academic lab should be focused on ELO's.
2.) Students should be assessed on the ELO and then split into differentiated groups for tier 2 instruction.
3.) If they already know the ELO, they should do extension activities.

If you choose to do math interventions one day and ELA the next, no problem. If you want to do math for two weeks and ELA for the next two weeks, that is great. But the bottom line is that our MAP scores do not afford us the luxury of spending 50 minutes a day on homework, free reading, or anything that isn't essential.

This one is for Angie Jackson:)
