Happy Prevention Week
Thank you for being so understanding with our impromptu fire drill. It is Fire Prevention Week and the PBFD likes to make sure we are prepared. Just an FYI, we were able to evacuate the building faster than the previous occupants did. So, good work on that. The fire department will be back at another time to do a surprise drill later in the year. Hopefully, everything will be functioning the next time.
Ribbon Cutting
There is a short ceremony planned for tomorrow at 4:00. I invite and encourage all of you to attend. There will be a speaker or two, a tour, and cookies. The event will be held on the playground and we invite all staff to attend.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences will be held on October 24th from 1:30-7:30. I will be sending out documents and information through our google classroom, so watch for those things. For many of you, this is the first time doing conferences with us. Here are a few things you should know.
- The number of students we have makes it virtually impossible to meet with every parent. For fourth grade to meet with each parent for 10 minutes, it would require 500 minutes of time (with no passing time or bathroom breaks). That is 8 hours and 20 minutes. You only have 6 hours, so we have an "opt out" letter that you can send home to your students who are doing great. The parents have the option of scheduling with you, but don't need to. If you still want to meet every parent, you will have to work some of them in at other times. Please meet as a pod to determine which students will receive conference invitations and which will receive the letter that everything is fine/no conference needed.
- We use this time to complete our Parent-School compact which is a requirement of Title 1 schools. This is something that you have parents sign while you are meeting with them and then turn into the office at the end. This form will be in the documents I send later.
- If you have a conference that you know will be difficult and you want one of the admin team to sit in on, let us know so we can be there. If you have a conference that has the potential to be difficult, let us know and we will be in the vicinity (we may come up with a code word later).
- Be sure to have parents sign the sign in sheet.
- As you schedule, please coordinate times with other teachers in the building (i.e. reading and special education) to avoid parents having to make multiple trips. Remember to schedule longer blocks of time if you anticipate needing it for certain students. You might allow spaces in the schedule, so you can “catch up” from time to time. You can put displays, videos, etc. in a partner teachers’ class for parents to do while they wait. Put chairs outside your classroom as well.
If you have any questions, let us know. We will do our best to help in any way.
