I hung out with Ken Williams pretty much all day at PBConnect. He was great to listen to and he had a lot of great insight about PLC teams and schools in general.
One of the things he had us do was to think about our own children or of children very close to us and to write a statement of what kind of experience we wanted them to have in school. Everyone had pretty specific ideas of what they wanted for their own children. Most said high academics, social and emotional well being, love, etc.
Then he asked what kind of school we wanted for other people's children. Of course, we all wanted the same for everyone. The problem is that somewhere along the line we lose sight of that. We stop making decisions for our students based on what we would do if it were our own child. That brought about a good conversation and then he talked about having essential learning targets for each grade and how those should be decided.
It was a good day. Some of the things he said really validated what we are doing and made me feel like we are on the right track. Other things he said made me think that we have a lot of work to do.
As many of you are aware (and all of you should know) the Poplar Bluff district requires that teachers keep their grade books up to date at least within two weeks. Poplar Bluff Middle School has always had a slightly higher standard of keeping grades caught up within one week. Since we are going on three weeks into the third quarter, when I look in SIS at gradebooks, I should should see some grades. Please be sure to keep up on inputting grades. Many parents and students look at the portal to see how they are doing.
Ken Williams showed this video clip and some from our building said they hadn't seen it, so here is Michael Jr with a message on "Know your 'Why'".
